One of the best
things about Salento is the number of beautiful towns and villages. While
they usually have modern outskirts, it is always worth following the signs
to the 'centro' where you should find a piazza surrounded by stunning
old buildings. There is a recognisable local style of architecture but
each place has its own character to reflect its individual history, local
materials and craftsmen. The main tourist spots are the historic port towns of Otranto and Gallipolli (not the famous one, which is in Turkey) which are interesting and lively places to visit. However, the lesser-known towns inland are also very beautiful and offer a more authentic (and cheaper) alternative to spend a holiday or buy a house. To the north of the peninsular in 'Alto Salento' are Ostuni, Martina Franca and Alberobello and this is 'Trulli' country (conical stone dwellings). This is the most developed part of Puglia for tourists and prices are higher but we also work with agents there. |
