“The
remains of Greek and Roman temples and pre-historic monuments are scattered
all over the dry sierras, popping up amid cactuses, olive groves and tobacco
farms.” Pizzica Express, The Guardian, 21 Aug 2004 |

The Salento
peninsula is rich with vegetation typical of the southern Mediterranean,
completely different from other better-known regions of Italy and more
reminiscant with parts of Greece. The fertile soil of the plains has been cultivated for millennia under the hot southern sun. The most spectacular time to visit is at the end of April to the middle of May when the countryside is filled with wild flowers. |
